The Cancer Drug Development Forum (CDDF) are pleased to announce and welcome Professor Ruth Plummer as the new chairperson of the CDDF from 28 November 2022 for a three-year term. Professor Plummer replaces Professor John Smyth in this role.
Professor Plummer has been serving the CDDF as vice chairperson since 2019. Among other important roles within cancer research, she is a professor of Experimental Cancer Medicine at Newcastle University and an honorary consultant medical oncologist at the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
It is with great fondness and gratitude that we bid farewell to Professor John Smyth as chairperson and Professor Francesco de Lorenzo as a board member at the CDDF.
With 25 years of experience in patient advocacy, Professor de Lorenzo has made strenuous efforts to have the patients’ voice heard and brought his skills and knowledge to CDDF discussions. His dedication and expertise has enabled the association to better capture the patient’s perspective and improve patient-centeredness.
Professor Smyth was one of the founders of the CDDF and has worked tirelessly for over two decades to expand the association and advance its mission. The valuable oversight and perspective Professor Smyth has brought to the organisation over the years will continue to guide its future.
John Smyth was appointed Edinburgh University’s first professor of medical oncology at the age of 33 and has led the development of cancer medicine in Scotland for the last three decades. We warmly invite you to learn more about Professor Smyth and his outstanding career in his recently published biography, “Taming the Beast – Memoirs of a Pioneering Cancer Physician”.
We greatly look forward to benefitting from Professor Plummer’s experience, knowledge and dedication as she leads our mission to increase efficiency in cancer drug development and accelerate effective treatment for patients.
